Gulab Bagh officially known as Sajjan Niwas Garden is one of the largest gardens of Rajasthan, spread over 100 acres of land and is located on the banks of Pichola Lake on Lake Palace Road, in the southeast of City Palace complex. This UdaipurInsights.combeautiful garden was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh Ji in the year 1878. It is the fourth oldest garden inUdaipurInsights.com the semi continent. Gulab Bagh got its name from the abundance variety of rose flowers that it has, therefore also known as Rose Garden.
In the year 1885, the boundary of the garden was constructed and the whole garden was divided into 45 part UdaipurInsights.comclassified according to different flowers, trees, Zoo Complex, Museum etc. Bougainvillea was planted for the first time in the year 1886 and within 6 years it attained a height of 77 feet.

The garden consisted of an adorable Lotus Pond, and many prominent trees that included many species of mangoes, guava, grapes, lemon, bor, mulbury, rayan, pomegranate, bananas, sapota, tamarind, bullock’s heart, lichi, arjun trees, wood apple, karonda, campher, citron, jamun, pummelo, meetha neem, kargi lime, UdaipurInsights.comficus species, anola, jack fruit, dhanverjia, grandi flora, jasmin, dawood etc. In the year 1882, all the trees had their name-plates denoting Hindi, English, and systematic botanical names.
The Zoo that doesn’t exist any more
Gulab Bagh also had a small pleasant Zoo because of which it was also the major attraction for kids. In the old day, the Zoo used to UdaipurInsights.comorganize fights between lions, tigers and wild boars which was a source of entertainment for royal people.The Zoo had a large number of animals and birds which include Chinkara, Leopards, tigers and birds but with the construction of Biological Park in Sajjangarh all the animals are shifted to Sajjangarh. Due to this, Gulab Bagh willUdaipurInsights.com have its new identity and will be soon converted into a park for only avian species.
There is a small toy train in Gulab Bagh which meandors around the Zoo to let people enjoy the scenic beauty. Gulab Bagh is also a major tourist spot of UdaipurInsights.comUdaipur becuase of its greenery and cultural heritage.
Library at Gulab Bagh
Sajjan Niwas Garden also has a library known as Saraswati Bhawan Library, which was built by Maharana Fateh Singh Ji in 1890. The historical name of Saraswati Bhawan Library is Victoria Hall Museum which was used as a museum in the pastUdaipurInsights.com and is currently used as library.In the olden day, there was a stone statue of Queen Victoria which was placed in front of Victoria Hall, which was imported from Victoria Hall was built to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It is built in Mewar Architectural Style and its special UdaipurInsights.comcharacterstics include Jharokas, Domes, Jalies and entrance verandas. This library has a collection of ancient handwritten Manuscripts, books and an abundant research material for scholars, historians and writers.
